Abstract

The rainfall is an important governing factor in planning the agricultural program for any area. It is therefore necessary to study the spatial and temporal variation of rainfall for judging the agricultural production potential and sustainability of agricultural production system. However, rainfall has one the highest spatial-temporal variability especially in mountain region where in addition, there is scarcity of information. Planning suitable measures for mitigating the problems requires through knowledge of the rainfall pattern. The present study was taken up to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of rainfall in study of Parambikulam Aliyar Palar (PAP), Tamil Nadu and India. These results were taken into geographical information system (GIS) platform to prepare the spatial distribution maps. The analysis of rainfall showed that there exists a wide variation in the rainfall amounts with variation from 445.2 mm to 4364 mm. The station Sholayar receives the highest rainfall of 4364 mm whereas Krishnapuram records the lowest of 445.2 mm. The annual variability ranges from 20 per cent to 122 per cent. The south, southwest and north-western parts of the basin experience the heavy rainfall whereas the least rainfall areas are the east, northeast and south-eastern parts of the basin.
