Effect of Priming Methods on Physiological and Biochemical Changes on Stored Seed of China Aster (Callistephus chinensis L. Nees)

Abstract

Laboratory experiment was conducted at college of horticulture during September 2011 toApril 2012 on different aged seeds of china aster (Callistephus chinensis L. Nees). Priming treatments with water, PEG, KNO3 showed a significant improvement in germination percentage, seedling vigour index, and enzyme activity over control. With increase in storage period, there was a sharp decline in the germination percentage, seedling vigour index and dehydrogenase activity, while there was an increase in electrical conductivity and lipid peroxidase activity. Among the various priming treatments priming with KNO3 was found to be better over other treatments on six month sold seed stored for six months.
