Characterization of Sunflower Hybrids and Parental Lines by Seed Esterase Isozymes

Abstract

Seed esterases profiling was undertaken for characterization of five sunflower hybrids and their parents. Although, esterases revealed very limited qualitative andquantitative polymorphism, it reasonably discriminated PKVSH 27 and its parental lines. Hybrids, KBSH 1 and CMS 240Ax ID 5016 andtheirparents were characterized with limited qualitative and quantitative polymorphic isoesterases. However, male parent and hybrid discrimination was not possible in hybrids; CMS 336A x ID 1020 and CMS 21A x ID3376, respectively. Lack of adequate number of exclusively genotype specific isoesterase markers was the major limitation for identification of the hybrids and their parents. In majority of the cases, quantitative differences in esterase profiles were not contrasting enough to distinguish the hybrids and their parents.
