Varietal Analysis of China Aster (Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees) Genotypes for the Different Physiological Growth Parameters

Abstract

China aster is a half hardy annual commercial and ornamental flower crop grown for loose as well as cut-flowers. The flowers of aster are used for flower arrangement, interior decoration, garland making and worshipping. The present investigation was conducted during rabi season of 2006–2007 and 2007–2008 at Hi-tech Horticulture project, Saidapur Farm, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad with the objective to evaluate china aster varieties for the different physiological growth parameters under transitional tract of northern Karnataka. Among the varieties, Phule Ganesh Violet was found superior which has exhibited maximum leaf area per plant of 13.66, 37.95, 44.06 and 46.16 cm2 at 45, 75, 105 DAT and at harvest, respectively. Phule Ganesh Violet was found superior with maximum leaf area index of 0.010, 0.028, 0.030 and 0.030 at 45, 75, 105 DAT and at harvest, respectively. Among the varieties, Phule Ganesh White was found superior with maximum leaf area duration of 0.30 days at 45–75 DAT and Phule Ganesh Purple at 75–105 DAT and 105 DAT-at harvest (0.38 and 0.38, days, respectively). The variations in LAD, CGR, AGR and NAR were noted among the china aster varieties were discussed.
