Heterosis for Yield and Yield Components in Okra

Abstract

Twenty one F1 crosses along with sevenparents were evaluated during kharif, 2013 to study the heterosis for yield and yield components in okra. Manifestation of heterosis of higher order for fruit yield per plant, number of branches per plant, number of fruit per plant and number of nodes per plant for realization of heterosis for fruit yield. The maximum heterosis over better parent for fruit yield per plant was observed to be 54.18% and that to over useful heterosis was found 31.71%. Five potential heterosis cross combinations viz., P2 x P7 (Parbhani Bhendi x IC 282273), P3 x P7 (Pusa A-4 x IC 282273), P2 x P4 (Parbhani Bhendi x Punjab-8) P4 x P6 (Punjab-8 x IC 3137A) and P1 x P5 (Parbhani Bhendi x Arka Bahar)were identifiedas promising for fruit yield per plant.
