Introduction of high yielding varieties during the early period of green revolution have shown increased production and productivity of crops. Without much improved management technologies the crops were yielded its potential due to inherent high fertility status of the soil in the initial years. Continuous and intensive cultivation justified the improved management technologies to sustain the high productivity. Sustainability as a goal of agricultural research and development is a relatively recent concept. Inspite of the effort made by many scientists, the productivity of crops have not achieved the potential. This is attributed because of low nutrient and water use efficiency crops. Breaking this yield barrier through the new scientific approach, the nanotechnology may produce the expected results to increase the productivity of crops and meet the challenges of food security of the country in the coming years.
