Transfer of Improved Technology of Black Gram Production through Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs) in Kalaburagi region of Northern Karnataka

Front line demonstrations (FLDs) were conducted in different regions in the Kalaburagi region of Northern Karnataka having predominantly vertisols with pegionpea, chick pea and Black gram based cropping systems. Within a span of four years (2010–11 to 2013–14) a total of 59 demonstrations were laid to educate the farmers through live field demonstrations. The results indicated that, on an average the highest yield achieved by adopting improved technologies was 11.25 q ha⁻¹ whereas, the corresponding yield range under farmers practice was 5.0 q ha⁻¹ to 10.4 q ha⁻¹. Adoption of improved technologies also resulted in better utilization of the natural resource as reflected in terms of WUE and the applied nutrients in terms of factor productivity and correspondingly on the profitability on per rupee invested.
