Comparitive Economics of Pre-Harvest Contract and Traditional Method of Harvest of Mango In Karnataka

India is the highest producer (175 lakh tons) and exporter of Mango in the world. During 2010–11 India exported 59.22 thousand tons of Mango valuing Rs.162.92 crores. More than 85 per cent of Mango growers lease out their orchards to contractors due to lack of knowledge about market linkages. Thus an attempt has been made tocompare the cost and returns of contractors who lease in Mango orchards from growers and farmers who maintaining their own orchards, by collecting information from 15 each respondents randomly selected from Ramanagar and Magadi taluka of Ramanagar district and Srinivaspur and Mulabagal taluk of Kolar district. The results indicated that per acre net profit realized by farmer cum contractor (Rs. 17, 511) was more than contractors (Rs. 8, 609) this infers that the farmer will get more profit if he maintains his orchard rather than leasing it to the contractor.
