Abstract

Indian poultry industry is growing at tremendously faster growth rate. The propelling factors behind are the evolution of management system in poultry sector, organization in production, distribution and marketing activities, continuous research and development in technical and technological aspects active participation of key stakeholders towards betterment of sector. There is very significant difference in the structure of poultry farming activity four-five decades ago and now. In the earlier days, people used to practice only backyard farming with desi poultry breeds fed mostly on scavenging but from the inception of integration or contract farming system there is continuous development in breeds productivity and yield, feeding methods, rearing methods and many more. This article reviews the various previous studies done in poultry sector focusing on older or traditional of backyard farming system and integrated or contract farming system and differences in them from productivity, economic and management point of view.
