Correlates of Characteristics of Rural Youth with their Participation in Organic Sugarcane Cultivation under Cauvery Command Area of Karnataka

The present study was conducted in Cauvery Command Area of Karnataka during 2012 to know the relationship between personal and sociopsychological characteristics with participation of rural youth in organic sugarcane cultivation. The investigation included 60 rural youth practicing organic sugarcane cultivation from each three taluks of Mandya and Mysore districts which were selected based on maximum number of Savayava Krushi Sangas/Parivaras (SKS/P). The results revealed that the characteristics namely extension participation, extension contact, attitude towards organic farming, risk orientation, level of aspiration, social participation and education level have positive and significant relationship with participation of rural youth. Further, variation in the participation of rural youth was explainedto the 64.30 per cent by all the 14 variables consider forthe study. Hence, the concerned development departments/agencies should select the rural youth for extension educational programs by considering these characteristics to promote their participation to the maximum extend.
