Photoperiod-Sensitivity Studies of Parental Lines and their Hybrids in Rabi Sorghum

Abstract

The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications during rabi 2013–14 at All India Co-ordinated Sorghum Improvement Project, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, Dist. Ahmednagar (M.S.). Seven sowing dates were assigned to main plot and 16 parental lines with four male sterile and their maintainers and four restorer and their four respective hybrids were assigned to sub plot treatment. The photoperiod sensitivity studies revealed that, among the genotypes studied the parental lines BJV 116, RMS 2010–10 B, RMS 201024 A and 185 A displayed lower magnitude of photoperiod sensitivity for early sowing while, RSV 1130 and hybrid RMS 2010–24 A X RSV 1098 recorded the lower magnitude of photoperiod sensitivity for late sowings indicating their photoperiod insensitivity for rabi season were found to sustain climatic changes and which could be commercially exploited in breeding programme for seed production from which restorer lines BJV 116 which gives higher harvest index and RMS 2010–24 A x RSV 1098 which is the second high yielding hybrid recorded the lower photoperiod-sensitivity and were identified as photo-insensitive show that a low degree of photoperiod sensitivity is a requirement for broad adaptation in sorghum shows positive relation with grain yield and yield contributing parameters.
