Abstract

Analysis of bidi tobacco dust for its quality and pH of its water extract revealed that the bidi tobacco dust used in the experiment contained 1.74, 3.92 and 3.70 per cent of nicotine, reducing sugar and chloride, respectively. The pH measured in water extract of tobacco dust @ 1, 5, 10 per cent and in control (water only) was 7.84, 7.10, 6.49 and 7.50, respectively. Effect of water extract of bidi tobacco dust on egg hatching of root-knot nematode revealed that the extract @ of 1, 5 and 10 per cent was found ovicidal to root-knot nematode. The egg hatching was significantly reduced/prevented within the extract and even on transfer of egg masses in water. Its 5 and 10 per cent concentrations completely prevented egg hatching showing strong ovicidal action; while, 1 per cent was partial ovicidal in action.
