Remediation of Dye and Textile Effluent Contaminated Soil-An Integrated Approach Involving Leaching and Application of Gypsum and Bio amendments

Abstract

Thousands of hectares of agricultural lands in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu are affected due to indiscriminate disposal of dye and textile effluents. In the current study an integrated approach, involving leaching and application of gypsum and bio amendments (green manure/poultry manure) in remediating dye and textile effluent contaminated soil was examined. Results of the pot experiment showed that combined application of gypsum (50% requirement) and bio amendments (poultry manure) and leaching after one week was found effective in removing the salts from the contaminated soil and resulted in significant improvement in the growth of sunflower. The study has demonstrated the potential of an integrated approach in remediating the soils contaminated due to the disposal of dye and textile effluents.
