Effect of Plant Spacing on Growth Parameters and Yield and Yield Contributing Characters in Bt and Non Bt Cotton Hybrids under Rainfed Condition

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to find out the effect of plant spacing (90 x 30 cm, 90 x 60 cm, 120 x 45 and 180 x 30 cm) on the productivity and performance of Bt (Bunny Bt, Malika Bt. and Ajeet 155) and Non Bt (Bunny non Bt) cotton hybrid under rainfed condition. The result showed that highest plant height, number of functional leaves plant−1, number of square plant−1, primary branches plant−1, number of bolls plant−1, days to 50% flowering, biomass at 50% flowering and days to maturity were found in hybrid Malika Bt. The plant spacing 90 x 30 cm showed significant effect in respect to plant height, number of functional leaves, primary branches plant−1, number of bolls plant−1and spacing 180 x 30 cm recorded highest number of primary branches and bolls plant−1 than all other spacing's. Effect of varieties and different plant spacing was significant in yield and yield components except in boll weight at different spacing. Statistically highest seed cotton yield was produced by Malika Bt and Ajeet 155 Bt while minimum yield was produced by Bunny non Bt. The interaction effect due to different factors under study were non-significant in respect to growth parameters and yield and yield contributing characters at all stage of crop growth.
