Abstract

The study aims to examine the comparative economics of custom hiring and traditional methods in different operation of paddy cultivation in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. The survey for this purpose was conducted in two blocks of Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Primary data were collected from 80 farmers from four villages of two blocks through personal interview method with the help of prestructured schedule for the year 2014–15. The cost of cultivation of paddy was Rs. 35301.00 and Rs. 33804.71 in traditional (Bullock) and custom hiring method. Productivity of paddy was more in custom hiring method as compared to traditional method, due to timely completion of operations. Thus, custom hiring of farm machinery provide a viable option to the farmer's especially smaller ones through reduction in total cost of cultivation and increase in profitability. Productivity of paddy per hectare was 43.30 quintals and 46.44 quintals in traditional method and custom hiring respectively. Benefit cost ratio in custom hiring method was 2.07: 1, which was higher as compared to the traditional method (1.85: 1).
