Analysis of Factors Influencing the Preferences for Vegetable Seed Purchase in Raipur District of Chhattisgarh

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze factors influencing the preferences for vegetable seed purchase in four crops i.e. cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal and tomato in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Survey for this purpose was conducted in two blocks of Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Primary data were collected from 80 farmers from four villages of two blocks through personal interview method with the help of pre-structured schedule for the year 2014–15. By using Garretts’ ranking technique study found that among the seventh factors higher yield ranked first place with72.98 means score, price ranked second place with 59.18 means score, dealers’ guidance ranked third place with 55.66 means score, brand ranked fourth place with 49.1 means score, availability of credit ranked fifth place with 42.22 means score, neighbors’ or family opinion ranked sixth place with 35.77 means score and last good germination ranked seventh place with 35.35 means score by the farmers. From the study it was very clear that farmers were more concerned about higher yield, price, dealers’ guidance and then for other factors while purchasing vegetable seeds in the study area. Therefore this study suggests that seed companies should focus on top ranked factors while launching new varieties of vegetable seeds in the study area.
