Effect of Feeding Sweet Sorghum Fodder on Blood Metabolites in Crossbred (HF X Deoni) Cows

Abstract

The research was conducted to evaluate the effect of green sweet sorghum, maize and their combination on blood composition of Holstein Friesian x Deoni crossbred cattle. The average daily dry matter intake were 9.66, 10.09 and 10.50 kg/day, respectively under 100% maize (T1), 50% sweet sorghum + 50% maize (T2) and 75% sweet sorghum + 25% maize (T3) fed groups showing significant (P<0.01) differences among them. The average dry matter intake per 100 kg body weight were 3.07, 3.21 and 3.35 kg/100 body weight under T1, T2 and T3 groups. Supplementation of sweet sorghum green fodder by replacing maize green fodder had positive response towards nutrient intake (P<0.01). In respect of blood profile concerns, the blood profile in all the groups were similar for Hb, blood glucose, total serumprotein and blood urea nitrogen showing non-significant differences among them. Based on the results, the study revealed that 75% sweet sorghum + 25% maize fed group shows highest nutrient intake and non significant effect on all blood constituents in HF x Deoni crossbred cattle indicated that the cows were having more or less similar physiological status.
