An attempt has been made to compare the economics of milk production for buffalo and cross-bred cow in Anand district of Gujarat. The data were collected from 60 milk producing farmer from 6 villages of 3 talukasof Anand district of Gujarat. The average total maintenance cost for buffalo (n=146) and cross-bred cow (n=236) per year per milch animal was about Rs 67076 and Rs 66350 respectively. The major portion for cost goes to cost of fodder, concentrate and human labour which constitute about 70–73% of total cost of maintenance of milch animal. The net profit per year per buffalo was Rs 25849 while in case of crossbred it was Rs 40567. The total cost of milk production (cost C2) per litre for buffalo and cross-bred cow were found Rs 26.43 and 14.72, respectively. The input output ratio for buffalo and cross-bred cow was calculated on the basis of cost C2 were found 1.35 and 1.61.
