Abstract

The present study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant activities of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit. The antioxidant activities of extract have been evaluated by using a range of in vitro assays. In case of in vitro studies, the antioxidant activity of pomegranate fruit was 198.31 mg/100g; 192.25 mg/100g; 181.13 mg/100g and 143.24 mg/100g by DPPH, nitric oxide, superoxide radical scavenging assays and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay, respectively. The free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities may be attributed to the presence of total poly phenols (148.61 mg/100g), total flavonoid (209.83 mg/100g) and ascorbic acid content (24.21 mg/100g) present in pomegranate fruit. The results obtained in the present study indicate that the pomegranate fruit is a potential source of natural antioxidant.
