Indigenous food grain storage concepts of India

India is among the top producers, consumers and exporters of both cereals and pulses. Over 70% of the grain produced in the country is stored on-farm before being moved to commercial facilities for subsequent marketing. In this paper, indigenous methods of food grain storage have been reviewed. Focus is given on concepts applicable to farm and household storage practices. Various concepts for safe storage practices based on indigenous knowledge including storage structures and techniques, natural pest repellents/grain protectants, physical treatments, and rat proofing methods are explained. Also, attempt is made to explain the underling science behind these indigenous grain storage techniques.
