Pyricularia oryzae Cavara from rice (Oryza sativa L.) blast disease was grown on twelve different solid and liquid media. The Fresh Rice Leaf Agar, Oat Meal Agar and Rice Straw Agar were best for growth and sporulation of P. oryzae in solid and broth media. The maximum growth and excellent sporulation was recorded at 25°C (±0.5°C) which was at par with 30°C (±0.5°C) on Fresh Rice Leaf Agar medium. The maximum growth and sporulation was recorded in constant light. The fungus produced maximum dry mycelial weight and sporulation at pH 5 to 6 in broth media. The growth and sporulation was excellent in Peptone, the next best were Potassium nitrate, Sodium nitrate and Calcium nitrate as nitrogen source. The ammonical nitrogenous sources supported poor growth and spore formation of P. oryzae. Starch proved best for growth by P. oryzae, followed by Sucrose and Glucose, while maximum sporulation was on Starch, Sucrose and Mannitol as carbon source.
