Abstract

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) an ancient crop is a member of the family Compositae or Asteraceae. The appropriate knowledge of interrelationship between seed yield and its contributing characters can significantly improve the efficiency of breeding programme. Hence, the present objectives of estimating the correlations between different quantitative traits and carrying out path coefficient analysis to know the direct and indirect contribution of component traits to seed yield in safflower. Eighty safflower (carthmus tinctorius) accessions along with five checks varities from Agricultural Research Station, Annigeri were evaluated in augmented randomized block design with 5 blocks during rabi 2013- 2014. The present study was to determine the degree of association between yield and it's component characters and their direct, indirect effects on grain yield in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). The data were recorded on five competitive fertile plants for plant height (cm), days to 50% flowering, number of capitula per plant, capitulum diameter, number of seeds per capitulum, Flower weight(g), test weight (g), oil content (%), hull content(%), biological yield, hull percentage and seed yield per plant (g). The correlation studies revealed strong positive association of yield with number of capitula per plant, biological yield and harvest index. Path analysis revealed that the character plant height, days to fifty percent flowering, number of capitula per plant, number of seeds per capitulum, 100 seed weight, biological yield and harvest index had strong positive association with seed yield indicating importance of direct selection for these characters.
