Evaluation of tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) genotypes for yield and quality

Abstract

Studies on the evaluation of tamarind genotypes for growth, yield and quality located at All India Co- ordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture, Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola, was conducted during the season 2012–2013. Significant variation was observed among the genotypes with respect to pod yield, pod character, quality attributes physico-chemical attributes. Among genotypes studied Highest pod yield was obtained in genotypes DAAT-W-1 and DAAT-E-5 (30 kg tree−1) However, lowest seed weight pod−1 (2.81 g) and shell weight pod−1 (2.36 g) was observed in DAAT-E-5. The lowest pod yield per tree was found in genotypes DAAT-WF-1 and DAAT-E-6 (2.25 kg tree−1). Tamarind genotype DAAT-W-4 showed maximum pulp weight pod−1 (5.82 g), pulp per cent (46.60%), TSS (53.70°Brix), tartaric acid (17.04%), reducing sugar (28.66%), total sugar (33.85%), pulp to seed ratio (1.65) and minimum seed per cent (28.16%).
