Abstract

Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn (teleomorph: Thanatephorus cucumeris) is a soil-borne plant pathogens, infects many agricultural and horticultural crops. Pathogen showing greater extent of variation in the cultural, morphological and pathogenic. Variations in R. solani isolates were also recorded based on the anastomosis groups (AGs) and so far 14 AGs have been reported. Identification based on anastomosis groups (AGs) requires meticulous microscopic experience, and it is a time-consuming procedure. In fact, differentiation of R. solani isolates based on phenotypic characters has proved to be very tedious and less reliable. Accurate detection of genetic variation amongst strains/isolates within a species has been reported to be very successful in R. solani and other fungi using molecular markers like Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Internal Transcribed Spacer region (ITS), Universal Rice Primers (URP).
