Abstract

Effect of 10% aqueous extracts of dry leaves of Imperata cylindrica, Azardirachta indica, Mangifera indica, Syzygium cumini, Helianthus annus and Sorghum bicolour skeels was investigated against germination and seedling growth of one of the most serious weeds viz., Parthenium hysterophorus. Aqueous extract of all the employed concentration of Azardirachta indica, Mangifera indica and Imperata cylindrica proved highly effective resulting in significant reduction of 30–40% in germination of parthenium seed. Aqueous extract of sorghum bicolor, Syzygium cumini and Helianthus annuus proved less effective Seedlings growth in terms of root length, shoot length, plant height, number of flowers, number of branches was also significantly reduced by Azardirachta indica, Imperata cylindrica and Mangifera indica same concentration of Syzygium cumini, Helianthus annusand and Sorghum bicolor were proved less toxic.
