The genome of a doubled haploid banana (Musa acuminata) genotype (2n=22) DH-Pahang was sequenced by Angelique D'Hont and coworkers with the help of two French research organizations, CIRAD and CEA-Genoscope under the framework of “Global Musa Genomics Consortium” with the financial aid from “The French National Research Agency (ANR)”. The team sequenced the genome of banana within two years and disentangled the complex genetics of this vital crop. The sequence will facilitate the identification of genes affecting important agronomic traits such as insect, pest and disease resistance for the improvement through conventional breeding approaches as well as biotechnological techniques. It will offer an extraordinary opportunity to explore genetic variability in the crop and to work for its genetic improvement either by cis-genic or trans-genic genetic engineering methods or by classical breeding programs.
