Bacterial blight (BB) is one of the important rice diseases that cause significant yield losses. The bacterial blight resistance gene Xa33 provides broad spectrum resistance against Xoo isolates in India. We assessed ten SSR markers for parental polymorphism from the vicinity of the gene Xa33. A new SSR marker RMWR7.5 closely linked to Xa33 was identified in the population of the cross ‘CO43’/‘FBRI-15’. This marker along with RMWR7.6 was validated for their specificity and usefulness in breeding. We alsoobserved the expected marker allele pattern according to the phenotypic classification into resistant and susceptible genotypes in F2 and F3 populations. The results confirmed that the markers RMWR7.5 and RMWR7.6 are effective for selecting resistant plants, thus can be used for deployment of Xa33 into the rice breeding program.
