Studies on Per Se Performance Associated with Component Characters on Yield of Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

Abstract

The per se performance of nine eggplant genotypes and 20 hybrids were studied for fruit yield and productivity traits during late rabi of 2012–13 at Vegetable Research Scheme, R.H.R.S., Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari. ANOVA revealedthe existence of significant difference for both parents and hybrids for all the characters. Among parents the variance due to both female, male was highly significant for all the traits indicating the existence of enormous amount of genetic variability. From the mean performance of the parents it was found that lines, AB-8/5, AB-7/2, GOB-1 and GJB-2 were adjudged to be the superior parents by expressing significant mean values for majority of the characters. Hence, these parents were considered as desirable ones for construction of yield coupled with quality. The evaluation of hybrids based on per se performance disclosed that the hybrids excelled in their mean in order of AB-8/5 x GJB-2, AB-8/5 x GBL-1, JBR-6/7 x GJB-2, AB-7/2 x JDNB-19 and JBR-8/7 x GOB-1.
