Histological Studies on Grafting of Annual Moringa scion (Pkm 1) with Perennial Moringa Rootstocks

Abstract

The aim of the study was to observe histological development during the union of rootstock and scion in moringa and to assess the rate of compatibility related to different growing stages of the grafts. Seedlings of perennial moringa rootstocks viz., moolanur and karumbu types were wedge grafted individually with same thickness of scion of annual moringa var. PKM1. Changes in the graft union with the influence of grafting success and subsequent performance of compatible grafts were observed. Fifteen days after grafting, formation of necrotic layer followed by enlargement of calli cells between rootstocks and scion were identified. Later, there was gradual disappearance of necrotic layer preceding callus formation and the fusion of scion and rootstock was observed on twenty two days after grafting. Thirty days after grafting, cambium linkage and healing of graft union in the edge were also noticed. Graft union is a key factor for compatibility of grafts and subsequent performances of compatible grafts. From this study it was noticed that successful grafts can be produced within one month inmoringa with perennial moringa rootstocks and annual moringa scion.
