Fifty five isolates of cellulose-degrading bacteria and 22 isolates of cellulose-degrading fungi were isolated from soil samples collected from twenty different locations by enriching by using the carboxymethyl cellulose agar medium (CMC). To check the cellulase activity of the organisms, diameter of clear zone around the colony and hydrolytic efficiency on cellulose were measured by Congo red assay. Among the isolated microorganisms, ALC-11 and SPuFA exhibited the maximum zone of clearance around the colony with diameter of 32 and 28mm and with the cellulolytic efficiency of 479% and 460%, respectively. The extracellular cellulase activities ranged from 129.17 to 297.17 IU/mL for bacteria and 135.50 to 257.66 IU/mL for fungi.
