Abstract

Genetic variability, broad sense heritability and genetic advance for seed yield and its attributing traits were studied in 40 diverse genotypes of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). Analysis of variance was carried out for the 12 character and results revealed that highly significant differences among varieties for all the characters except number of primary branches per plant and number of seeds per pod. Among all the traits, pod bearing length exhibited highest estimate of PCV and GCV whereas, highest PCV was observed for number of pods per plant. Further, 100-seed weight, pod bearing length and plant height had high genetic advance coupled with high heritability which suggested that these three traits are under the control of additive gene action and can be improved through simple selection procedures.
