A study was conducted to assess the magnitude of combining ability in the line x tester cross material involving 24 hybrids generated by crossing eight lines with three testers and one commercial hybrid check (Hybrid Mahyco-28) in okra during 2013–2014 at Regional Horticultural Research Station, ASPEE College of Horticulture and Forestry, N.A.U., Navsari. Analysis of variance showed significant difference among genotypes for all the characters for yield and yield contributing traits except number of pods per plant. The gene action studies indicated that there was preponderance of non-additive gene action for all the traitsunderstudy. Genotype AOL 09–02, AOL 10–22 and JOL 12–02 can be recommended for use as one of the parents to generate highyieldinghybrids, as well as in varietal improvement programme because high GCA effects in many characters. Among 24 hybrids, JOL 12–02 x HRB-55 has significant SCA effect in desired direction for pod yield per plant, number of branches per plant, pod diameter and pod weight. It is proposed to evaluate these hybrids over locations and seasons to confirm other potentiality for exploitation of heterosis and combining ability in okra.
