The present study was carried out to induce genetic variability in sesame through mutation. Seeds were subjected to different treatment levels of gamma rays and ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS). The treated plants were self-fertilized for generations to observe different morphological characters in M2 generation. Several unique and interesting mutants were isolated in this investigation. These independent mutants had different phenotypes fromthe control. Highest mutation frequencies for flower colour and seed characteristics were found to be induced by 400Gy gamma rays and by 1.0per cent EMS in VRI 2. The most distinct mutants isolated were flower colour variants along with altered size, shape and coat colour of seeds.
