Evaluation of Suitable Tree Species for Sodic Soil Under Field Condition in Cauvery Delta Zone, South India

Abstract

A evaluation was performed under field conditions for the plantations established in the year 2004 at Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute, Trichy located at 10°45’ N latitude and 78°36’ E longitude and an altitude of 78 m above MSL. The tree species studied under field condition for the biometric attributes (Tree height in meter, Girth at breast height in centimeter, Diameter at Breast Height in centimeter and Tree volume in m3) was Acacia nilotica, Albizia lebbeck, Azadirachta indica, Leucaena leucocephala, Pongamia pinnata, Prosopis juliflora and Tamarindus indica. The research findings among the seven tree species studied was Prosopis juliflora have surpassed all the dimensions of measurement followed by Acacia nilotica indicating the ability to put up phenomenal growth even under harsh sodic conditions. Whereas, Albizia lebbeck, Azadirachta indica, Leucaena leucocephala and Pongamia pinnata was the second best performing tree species. Finally poor performing tree species under sodic soil condition was Tamarindus indica in all the biometric attributes.
