A Demographic Analysis of the Power Loom Sector of Mau City

The Indian textile sector consists of three important segments namely; mill sector, handloom sector, and power loom sector. The handloom sector is the oldest among them, and the mill sector is over one hundred and fifty years old. The power loom sector which has existed for over three decades still occupies a prominent position. In 1930 there were about 3000 power loom in the country and, by the end of 2008–2009 it was raised about 22.05 lakh. The power loom is spread all over the India. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka are having a dominant position in power loom. The present study is inducted for Mau district of Uttar Pradesh which is a hub of power loom. Mau city is famous for weaving for a long time, which has created a unique demography. This sector has a huge involvement of female labor in conjunction of child labor. The present paper tries to analyses some important aspects of the demographic structure of the city as well as to assess the general wellbeing conditions of the households. This paper investigates the problem using primary as well as secondary data. Simple statistical technique of analysis and GIS technique for map making is used to present the results.
