Abstract

Morphometric analysis of a river basin provides a quantitative description of the drainage system, which is an important aspect of the characterization of basins. In the present study an attempt is made to study the morphometric parameters of Kunderu river basin using GIS techniques. Streams have been digitized from survey of India toposheets and ordered using Strahler's Method. All the linear, relief and areal aspects have been calculated in ARC GIS environment. Relief aspects have been calculated using Aster Dem with 30 meter resolution. The relief analysis reveals that the basin area more or less falls under the category of low flat plain area. The channel network morphometry indicates that the basin and sub basins confirm to Horton's law of stream number and stream lengths. Drainage density is more or less uniform in all the sub basins. The high stream frequency and fine drainage texture of sub basins give an indication about low to moderate infiltration and, both, moderate to high runoff and sediment loss.
