Rural-Urban Fringe in Delhi-NCR: A Conceptual Approach

India has witnessed rapid urbanisation in the past few decades. As a result, the larger cities are expanding, and the areas on their fringe i.e. the border between the urban and rural areas where the two often mix, is also influenced by such development. All the cities have their specific authorities and institutions for planning and governance of the developmental process, but the fringe areas are characterised by absence of such authorities. The region of Delhi, unlike the other cities, have a multi-level as well as multi-government form of governance, coinciding with the governments of the neighbouring states, while it is also growing in terms of population and geographical area. The pressure of urbanisation is affecting the rural-urban fringes of Delhi too. This paper is an attempt to analyse the challenges faced by the population of fringe areas of Delhi, as well as the remedies for dealing with the urbanisation of such fringe areas.
