In this paper an attempt has been made to analyse changes in literacy patterns among states in India by using 2011 census data. Decadal growth rate of literacy has been calculated and ranking of each state has been done to identify their position among states in 2011 census and gender gap has been calculated by drawing a comparison between 2001 and 2011 census. Paper focuses on percent increase in literacy rate (total, male and female) among states of India during 2001–2011. Paper also highlights how disparity in male-female literacy rate continues to persist inspite of growth in literacy rate.
