Abstract

With over one million people, India is the second most populous country in the world, where public sector plays a significant role in providing healthcare facilities to each section of the society. Keeping this in mind the present study is an attempt to assess the provision of healthcare and delivery system in India. The data for the study has been obtained from various policy documents, government reports, research papers and newspaper reports. Descriptive method of research has been employed for evaluating and analyzing the data. The present study reports that there is a great discrepancy in the quality and coverage of medical treatment in India where Rural areas often suffer from absenteeism of doctors and there is a wide gap in health care system between rural and urban areas. Indian healthcare system also has an increasing involvement of private sector which has become an issue of debate among intellects, policy planners and politician whether the appropriate solution is in PPP or in enhancing the role of government to ensure accessibility and equity for the people of low income in rural and urban areas. Thus, it can be concluded from the study that there is an urgent need to reform the healthcare system in India. Also efforts are to be taken to decentralize the system which seems not to be achieved.
