Abstract

This paper studies the historical background of urban development and planning in the city of Lucknow using pre and post-1857 revolt colonial maps. It also examines the urban sprawl in a post-colonial city with special focus on post-1991 developments using remote sensing data of three different time periods-1991, 2003 and 2016. The urban planning ofthe city had a significant British influence, especially after the revolt of 1857 and it still influences the way the city is being planned. In the last few decades, the city has experienced tremendous growth, especially in its northern and eastern sectors.
