Along with wind energy, accurate forecasting of wind speed are the basics of providing efficient power service provision to consumers. This article discusses the knowledge related to the wind energy system and performs a comparative study of wind speed forecasting in wind energy systems based on various available methods, such as persistence, physical, and statistical; additionally, novel and hybrid methods are discussed and analysed as well. Indeed, this is one of the significant and difficult tasks that power vendors and power system workers are facing and this is a problem related to power quality, sustainability, etc., given the worldwide penetration of wind energy. This problem can be resolved by putting in place a forecasting system. Doing so will allow a comprehensive analysis to reach the vendors and energy system engineers to select the most capable forecasting model for their forecasting system which in turn will assist scientists and researchers about the current trends and existing forecasting models related to wind speed forecast, which aid in future research enhancement in the field of wind energy system.
