While electric vehicles (EVs) eliminate tailpipe emissions, a major advantage, questions remain about their overall environmental impact and sustainability. This article explores these concerns, acknowledging the benefits of EVs over internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles—cleaner air and a reduced carbon footprint. However, it also identifies potential drawbacks, such as dependence on dirty electricity grids and the environmental cost of battery production. In conclusion, EVs offer a significant step towards sustainable mobility in India, but continued efforts are needed to minimize their environmental footprint throughout their lifecycle.
