Remote rural villages have long endured infrastructural gaps, especially with respect to electricity access. The insufficiency and unreliability of grid power supply have affected the lives of the population in many ways, including limited mobility after dark, safety concerns, human–animal conflict, and limited economic activities. In order to provide a clean, sustainable, and affordable solution to address these issues, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) designed and implemented solar street lights (SSLs) in more than 176 villages and sites across 3 states of north-eastern India. These lights significantly changed the socio-economic landscape of the villages and fostered safety, security, and livelihood enhancement. Such interventions not only help advance the cause of climate action but also create awareness and demand for clean energy technologies.
