The following parameters, like pH, EC, colour, total solids, volatile solids, hardness, chlorides, DO, BOD, COD, total nitrogen, active phosphorous, oil and grease, sulphate, alkalinity, potassium, and heavy metals were analysed. Further these water samples were treated with AC (activated carbon) prepared from agro-industrial residues (coconut shell, wood dust, paddy husk, and coconut fibre) and lignite. The treated water samples were analysed for pH, EC colour, total solids, and total hardness. The results of the study revealed that AC prepared from low cost materials, like agro-industrial wastes had the potential to be used as adsorbents in filtration bed for treating coal washery water.
