Abstract

The rising rate of cyber crime with its various and different characteristic features in the world over has been a source of concern to many. Specifically, Nigeria, one of the countries in the sub-Saharan Africa has been faced with this problem. In another vein, a number of Nigerians(mostly youths) have been blacklisted by Western nations, concerning their embarrassing involvement in different shapes of cyber crimes. In a way, it is expected that one of the ways through which cyber crimes can be controlled to the barest minimum is to understand people's knowledge of what makes up cyber crime. And based on understanding levels of knowledge, then one would be able to know what to do next(such as promoting their knowledge of what constitutes cyber crime). Essentially, this study was embarked upon to actually investigate knowledge of characteristic features of cyber crimes among university students. This study was informed since large number of university students are mostly youths, who happen to be more indicted of perpetrating cyber crimes than any category of individuals. The study was a cross-sectional survey, which sampled three types of university(Federal, State and Private University respectively). A total number of 287 university students participated in the study. Data were collected using questionnaire format. Both the Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed for data analysis. The obtained results were somewhat challenging and informing. It was, however, that concerted efforts should be geared towards enlightening people(most particularly youths) on what cyber crime entails.
