Abstract

The use of ICTs in higher educational institutions is critical to ensuring that Kenya is able to create an information literate citizenry, an important factor in the country's effectiveness in competing in the global market. Consequently, incorporating ICT in the teaching and learning in higher education may help to develop the kind of workers required in the information society; improve educational outcomes and enhance the quality of teaching and learning. However, despite the enthusiasm exhibited in exploiting ICT potential in many universities in Kenya, ICT-based learning is still very much in its infancy. In order to transition to a knowledge economy, Kenya's higher education sector must be supported by a dependable and robust ICT infrastructure and policies that allow information and ICT facilities to be accessed and be used by all. This paper looks at how ICT can contribute to making teaching and learning in Kenya's higher education more effective and the challenges that require to be overcome in order to achieve this.
