Abstract

The present study entitled “A descriptive study to assess the practice regarding breastfeeding among postnatal mothers of KMCH-IHSR, Coimbatore”. The objectives are to assess the breastfeeding practice and to find out the association between the breastfeeding practices with selected demographic variables. A descriptive, non-experimental study design was used. The study’s population comprises of Primi with Full Term Normal Delivery (FTND) mothers admitted to the postnatal ward at KMCH-IHSR, Coimbatore. The sample size was 60and a non-probability purposive sampling technique was applied to select the samples. Data was gathered using a self-structured questionnaire. The data was analysed using both descriptive (mean and percentage) and inferential (chi-square) statistics. The study result indicates, 38 (38%) of the samples had average practice compliance, 35 (35%) had good practice compliance, and 27 (27%) had poor practice compliance. The practice of breast feedingis significantly correlated with their marital status (p 0.038) and residence (p 0.44). Thus, it is evident that teaching postpartum women how to breastfeed will undoubtedly enhance their nursing practices.
