Abstract

Tuberculosis is a preventable and curable disease like other disease. It is not a hereditary disease. The disease primarily affects lungs and it can also affect any part of the body. The study was conducted among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in the District tuberculosis control centre at Poonamallee, Chennai. A quasi experimental study was conducted among pulmonary tuberculosis patients to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding pulmonary tuberculosis and its treatment. Totally 60 patients were selected and the major findings of the study results in the pretest showed that 56(93.3%) patients had inadequate knowledge and 4(6.6%) patients had moderately adequate knowledge. In the post test, results showed that 42(70%) patients had adequate knowledge and 18 (30%) patients had moderately adequate knowledge. This implied that teaching programme had played a vital role in increasing the knowledge of the patients on pulmonary tuberculosis.
