Alcohol is widely used in our society. Most individuals drink alcohol in ways that do not increase risk for alcohol use problems and may also derive a health benefit. This study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of recreational therapy on stress and affective states among alcoholics in selected de-addiction centers at Madurai. The research design used for this study was quasi experimental pretest posttest non-equivalent control group design samples were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The experimental and control group had 30 participants each. The tool used for assessing the stress and affective states was depression, Anxiety and stress scale and modified profile of mood states questionnaire. The mean posttest level of stress (13.5) in experimental group was lesser than the mean posttest level of stress (27) in the control group. The obtained ‘t’ value was (2.78). The mean posttest level of affective states (77.86) in experimental group was higher than the mean posttest level of affective states (33.4) in the control group; the obtained ‘t’ value was (16.15). There was a significant reduction in the posttest level of stress and increase in level of affective states in the experimental group. The study findings imply that the recreational therapy was effective in reducing stress and improving affective states among alcoholics.
