Maternal Parenting Styles and High School Student's Social Networking

Abstract

Social networking is inevitable in the present era; moreover because of the uncertain pandemic crisis the usage increased especially among the adolescent students. The unwanted behavior of students is related to the family environment. Familial factors play an important role in molding the children; moreover, parenting styles of the mother will reflect on their offspring's. Objectives of the study was to find out the maternal parenting styles of high school students, to find out the social networking among high school students and to find out the relationship between parenting styles and social networking. The main maternal parenting style adopted by the mothers were authoritarian style 150 (50%), authoritative 101 (33.7%) and permissive 49 (16.3%). Severe addiction was noted among 10 (3.3%) students, moderate addiction 20 (6.7%), mild addiction 119 (39.7%) and 151 (50.3%) students were not addicted to social networking. Authoritative parenting style was negatively correlated with social networking addiction; whereas significant positive correlation was obtained with social networking addiction and both authoritarian as well as permissive parenting styles.
